What Are YOU Doing in 2007?

Check out this video and then leave me a comment about a couple of simple things you are doing in 2007 to reduce your impact on global warming (or energy use, or your wallet... depending upon your point of view). Consider emailing a friend the link to this entry (click on the envelop below) so that they can add their comments too.

Here's a short list of waste-less resolutions for my household:

-make the transition to compact fluorescent bulbs

-repair leaky windows

-get a new efficient window fan for summer cooling (rather than getting AC)

-walk more, drive less

- Using paints that have no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)

- Wearing sweaters around the house. Gloves and hats go a little too far.

- washing all of my clothes on cold and hang drying if possible.

- Having shoes re-soled instead of buying new ones.

- Purchasing as many locally produced products to reduce the amount of transportation that it takes to get goods to our little peninsula.

- Borrowing books from the libary to learn more about what I can do to help.

- Planting a tree.

Hey I go to the library.. I didn't even think of that as a way to conserve energy, except that I usually bike or walk there and it's a pretty waste free way to entertain my toddler.

We also...
keep the heat at 60 during the day and 50 at night,
have a plot at the community garden and garden in the backyard as well (thanks, siler),
get our eggs (when available) from a kid in the area who raises chickens... last time I got a huge egg with two yokes! twins!
shop with cloth bags,
sew a little -- replace buttons and mend little rips to make things last longer. I also make a few things but I have very little skill at doing anything too impressive.
shop at thrift shops and accept hand-me-downs. I am very rarely the first person to own an article of clothing (except underwear and shoes)... same for my daughter.
play Go Fish, make bread, and go to playgrounds for entertainment,
wash and reuse ziplocs and yogurt containers,
save all my errands on the west side for one day, the south side for another day, etc. so I'm not driving all over town.

I am trying to listen to the grumpy old man who wanders about the house muttering something about pennies. I also need to use the dryer less.
